I watched this in the theater when it came out. I knew about the bad movies that have been made around the Dr. Seuss books. I almost died when I heard The Lorax was being made into the movie. I sat down and braced myself for the crap that I was going to watch. And to my surprise…well, let’s take a look.
Why this DOESN’T fail as a Movie: Yeah, I kind of liked this one. It wasn’t exactly the Seuss adaptation I expected, it was certainly functional as a motion picture. I liked Horton. I liked the mayor. I liked the family. I liked everything about it. The animation style was very Seuss-esque. It remained reasonably true to the original book and short film, and took liberties when it had to, though they were not always on the mark…
Why this DOESN’T fail as an Adaptation: Like I said earlier, this film stays pretty true to the original book, though slipping back into the story elements and humor of movies like The Lorax and The Grinch. What else is there to say? I actually liked this one.
In conclusion, Horton Hears a Who proves to be a decent adaptation of the classic book. Should you see it? Not if you are an extremely die hard Seuss fan. I’d see it if you are simply bored and want something to watch on Netflix.
See you later, Animators!
