Oswald Reviews: Spongebob Squarepants Featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom

This was a game I actually forgot about until I came across it again in my game collection. I looked at it and thought, “Yeah, this seems good.”

This was a game that was the end to a series of games that was about various classic Nicktoons teaming up to fight some sort of evil. Typically they were called Nicktoons Unite, but this one decided to put Spongebob in the spotlight.

How is it? Is it just as awesome as the idea of Nicktoons fighting together, or is this just another throwaway licensed game? Let’s see.

Story: As I explained earlier, this is a game that is basically Nicktoons work together to stop a great evil. In this case, the Nicktoons are fighting the Globs of Doom: large, orange goo that is possessing the minds of the various secondary characters.

The story is, once again, not very complex. In these types of games, the story doesn’t matter. Like Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda, the story is just giving context to the real star of the show: the gameplay. I’ll talk about that soon.

Graphics: The graphics on the characters are bad. Like…really bad. All the characters look hideous compared to their normal selves and the animation style is completely wrong. SQUIDWARD IS SUPPOSED TO WALK LIKE HE HAS TWO LEGS YOU IDIOTS!

…sorry…

Anyway, the characters all look terrible. While the environments don’t THAT bad, I still can’t get past the fact that Jimmy Neutron looks really weird.

Controls/Gameplay: The controls are actually really good. The characters are responsive, I know what I’m doing, and it’s really easy to get the hang of. My only complaint would be the motion controls, which is a real problem with most Wii games, so I’ll let it slide.

The gameplay gets really repetitive after a while. Each stage opens with a weird slide/portal section that is really easy. The area is only there to give you coins, which are also really easy to find and collect. The actual platforming/beat-em up sections are also really easy. The overall gameplay is just easy and repetitive. It may just be that I’m not the correct demographic for this game, but I really think the gameplay is too easy.

In conclusion, Globs of Doom is a decent game with a simple story and easy gameplay. While the character designs are absolutely hideous, kids will certainly get a kick out of playing this game.

See you later, Animators!
